Where have I been? Well for one thing graduating. Yes, its sad yet true. Yours truly has graduated and even moved away from Gainesville. It is a sad feeling, but we all have to move on sooner or later. So that explains where I am now and where I was back a few months ago, but doesn't explain where I was from Feb/March to Graduation. Well I had to stop blogging as people were getting too close to my real identity. I felt that the reason blogs were what they were is because anyone could say anything and not feel like what they said would be held against them. Many blogger identities became known and I think I may be one of the only bloggers left in which less then 10 people know who I really am.

So where is those blog going from here? Well I hope to have maybe recruited a few younger workers who will send me dirt and stories so I can maybe still formulate stories, but probably that will not happen and this blog will just die like most other blogs.

So that is to keep those who wondered up to date and now for a story.

Even though I may have graduated from UF the Facebook addiction is stronger then before. It is still tons of fun to add those co-workers, join the new global groups, etc. As I was surfing the facebook today I found the most interesting advertisement. It was for http://www.dropadd.com/. Taking a look at the site it was in a beta phase in which you could signup (with your gatorlink ID/password and a special invite only code) and the system would look for the open section(s) you would like to add to your schedule and add it if a seat ever opened up. UF has now blocked the system which I agree with. Sharing one's gatorlink ID and password is against UF rules.

So I wonder who came up with the site (Zach Jacobson, MacKenzie, Adam?) as I will admit I had an idea like that but 1. would not be able to program the code to do such a thing and 2. couldn't think of the loophole with the rules. So I do a little research on the domain name and it is registered privately so one could not trace it back to them. I have to say whoever did create the site at least was covering themselves.

The site now has the following message: "* 7/15 1:57am ALERT: The university has blocked our systems. We're evaluating options and looking for a solution.

Early beta users have been using our powerful and student-friendly service for months without incident."

It should be interesting to see what the site does and then also what UF Administration will do to combat the site.

Post your comments and/or feelings.

Predictions and Endorsements

Turn out: I don't think turn out will break 10,000. I am with Gatorman and I will go with 9400 +/- 150*.

Election results*:
President and VP - SWAMP 51.6% (4,773-4,927), UNITE 48.4% (4,477-4,622)
Treasurer - SWAMP 46.3% (4,329-4,422), UNITE 42.1% (3,824-4,021), Susan 11.6% (1,073-1,108)

Senate - I think SWAMP will take more senate seats then Unite, but no more then 6 more then Unite. It will be a close race I believe.

Online Voting Initiative will pass with a vote of 58.4% to 41.6%

* Results and Turn out do not factor in write in votes, all percentages are only off vote counts of voting for those on ballots.

As far as write in votes I think we will see a lot more then we did during the Fall election. More for the President/VP then Treasurer.

Endorsements:
Pres/VP - I am going with SWAMP. I feel Boyles and Washington will follow through with promises and even though Boyles is a non greek with a strong greek backing he will look out for the common student and also will act in the highest ethical manner that SB President should act.

Treasurer - Susan all the way. I think she is the longshot, but she was most qualified last year and still is most qualified this year. I am glad she is willing to try again.

Platform Review Short

So I noticed the last post may be too long for you to want to read throught so here are the rules and results, if you want the breakdown then read the previous post.

Rules:
Each issue can be awarded up to 3 points. I will also have the option to "mute" the issue and then a score of -3 will be added in. In order to even things out as each party has a different number of platforms the scores will be averaged and then multiplied by 33.3 to get an adjusted score. I know this will help Unite more as a negative 3 won't hurt as much, but if you have more platform issues then in all fairness it works. I will not be reviewing Susan's platform as I already think she is the most qualified for SBT and have given her my endorsement.

SWAMP
Total Score: 36
Number of Platform Issues: 28
Adjusted Score: 42.81

Unite
Total Score: 47
Number of Platform Issues: 39
Adjusted score: 40.13

So there we go we have a 42.81 for SWAMP and 40.13 for Unite. Looks like SWAMP takes a win just by a small percentage. I know it will be close come Thursday morning. Should be very interesting.

Platform Reviews

I know this has been covered in other blogs already but I am going to do this review in an around the horn style.

Swamp:
Ensure completion of wireless internet across campus and bring broadband internet to Family Housing

+2 Missed the +3 because of vagueness. I hope SG will work with the Administration to complete wireless as I don't think the Administration will do it alone and SG should not do it alone. As for broadband internet in Family Housing SWAMP will have to work with Housing to ensure this.

Create a 24-hour café on campus

+1 Recycled. Students do want a place to study all the time, not sure if it needs to be a "café" with coffee and snacks sold all the time.

Increase campus field lighting to aid student recreation

-3 Good intentions, fiscally irresponsible. SG had to cut budgets this year. Electricity costs are going up. Where will all this money come from? I like this idea, but more of a plan needs to be discussed then increasing the lighting.

Install medicinal (Tylenol, Advil) dispensers in Reitz Union restrooms

+3 Original idea. Think of all the extra money earned from this plan could go towards.

Improve safety on campus through increased coverage of emergency Blue Lights, better lighting and courtesy phones in Residence Hall Areas

+2 Reused, but safety is a big thing and there is no price you can put on that.

Increase the sustainability of University of Florida by bringing more recycling to campus, advocating to use biodegradable materials and ensure the use of Fair Trade products

+2 Important. All I have to say is this commenting thing may take forever.

Advocate to temporarily suspend open container laws on campus for Football Game Days

+1 I personally have not had any problems with this issue on gameday but I know some who have. This will get votes no doubt but not sure if this is a platform issue.

Increase the capacity and services available through WebMail

+2 I don't use webamil myself, but this would be nice for those who do. Really should have an issue such as educate those who use webmail about the alternatives but not all of us are as tech savvy and even webmail is complicated, wait nevermind, that is only at FSU.

Provide funding for extended Baby Gator hours and satellite child-care centers

+3 Good for graduate/families at UF, the under represented here.

Establish permanent academic travel grants

+1 Sure.

Bi-weekly Student Government podcasts updating students on noteworthy events

+/-0 Yeah zero points. Not so far out there to lose points, but nothing noteable to gain points. Original idea, but I don't see a use. Why spend time to recorded the events, upload it on the website for students to have to download, sync with iPod and listen when it is easier to upload the dates to the website.

Proactively increasing diversity of involvement in SG within cabinets and agencies such as Accent and SGP
+2

Establish liasons between the Career Resource Center and Academic Departments

+2

Reform Student Government to better represent students from all areas of UF
+1 Too vague to earn any more points then that.

Create a Student Government sponsored book exchange and post book buyback information online
Stop the use of overpriced course materials and CD’s in classes like Wildlife Issues and CGS2531 by putting material on WebCT
+1 Brilliant idea, but at the same time some people take these classesfor the easy A and therefore should pay a premium.

Work with the Gainesville community to bring discounted rates to student rates for cable, internet and professional exam review prices
+1 I do like issues outside of the range of just on campus items, but at the same time there will be alot of red tape in getting this accomplished.

Parking ticket forgiveness once an academic year for each student
-3 I have thought this was stupid the first time I heard this. Parking is already an issue, if people know they get a forgivness then I am sure everyone will cash in, which will cause more of an issue because more people will be illegally parking. I think they need to crack down more on parking, rather then lighten it.

Stop city attempts at raising towing rates

+1 Heard it before.

Increase free printing across campus
+/-0 Staying nuetral on this rather then deducting 3 points. I thinking 10 or 13 cents a page is a little extreme cost for printing and copies but at the same time free is a little too extreme as well. I like a median of reduced.

Support state legislative initiatives to make textbook purchases tax free
+3 I think Gatorman already said it when he discussed about the tax free list in the Fall. Good idea and if I can save $20 on books that is one more night at the bar I can take.

Continue to fight for fair tuition policies and the protection of Bright Futures

+2

Support student efforts to make UF a Top 10 Research University by creating an agency to sponsor academic conferences and networking events on campus
+2

Demand more female and minority faculty members at UF
+2

Support the continued development of the Women’s Studies Center and Program
+2

Make necessary structural repairs to La Casita and the Institute of Black Culture
+2

Create an Asian American Center and an Asian American Affairs Director
+2

Implement programs to help International Students integrate into Gainesville
+2

Total Score: 36
Number of Platform Issues: 28
Adjusted Score: 42.81

Unite
Ensure program funding for student organizations who maximize event turnout, such as Indian Student Association's GARBA
+/- 0 So the more people that show up to events the more money they get? What about what the event is or what the purpose is? I don't think that is fair

Prevent SG Administrative budget from being used for office redecoration
+2 Heard it before, but since the offices just got new furnature recently I believe this will happen

Reduce SG administrative budget by eliminating promotional items
+1 I like the pormo items, but give them out to students, not within SG. Cut the advertsing commercials or make them better. The commercials this year were pointless besdies flaunting the look at us principal.

Promote an open book policy by having financial reports available online
+3

Reinstate Student Government auditors from the General Accounting Office
+2

Improve training and clarify roles of Assistant Treasurers
+2

Consolidate lobbying efforts between the Florida Students Association and SG's privately-hired lobbyists
+/- 0 Too vague to me. As other's pointed out this sounds like removing one and we all know that will be FSA.

Dramatically reduce the SG Advertising budget. Ensure that advertisements have a targeted audience and specific purpose.
+1 Going back from my previous comments of promo items. The advertising budget though does not need to be reduced, just made to showcase improtant events, services or information.

Before SG officials look to reduce organizational budgets, SG will reduce its own budget wherever possible
+/- 0 Sounds nice to all those involved in large organizations, but doubt it will make too much of a difference. SG Orgs will get cut more then SG.

Publish Student Senate Agendas on the SG web site at least 24 hours in advance of all Senate meetings
+1 Good start, but I can not count the number of times bills were added from the floor

Create public debate time to precede the readings of each Senate bill rather than only once at the start of Senate meetings

-3 I might be harsh here, but I think that is stupid. Those who can not vote for the bill will not stay. Those who can vote will abuse this. Also this will make the meetings run longer because in theory you can get 5 min for each debate section where currntly you can have max of 5 min to talk about everything.

Re-design the SG web site to include immediately-updated, cross-referential data such as Senator voting records and financial impacts of a given bill
+1 Immediatly-updated? Glenda will be staying later Tuesday night to get the things on the website? I think not. Looks like SWAMP takes a win just by a small percentage. I know it will be close come Thursday morning. Should be very interesting.

Fun with the SG Website

Thanks to SP for helping me realize a programming exploit in the SG website.

Take a look at the two profiles on the SG website:
Jared Hernandez
John Boyles

Feel free to make your own and post them as comments, but play nice now.

Election Run Down

So elections are coming up. I pass by Turlington and get flyered every day from the different parties. How I have not missed that. I think the same people try to talk to me each day too, the first day I was nice a listened, but the second and third I just want to smack them and be like I talked to you earlier this week.

It seems as though Jared has spent the most personal money towards his campaign. His donation of $3500 went towards the Unite T-Shirts. Coming in second is John Boyles with a contribution to his campaign of $2100. Next in is John's running mate Lydia Washington with $1500 and then SWAMP Treasurer Candidate Ryan "I did not mess up the budget" Mosely with $1200. These numbers are only from the second period of which finance documents has to be submitted. John and Mosely during the first period donated $400 and $300 respectfully. I am still back at Keg's idea where T-Shirts are sold to supporters not given out. All of these fine candidates should not be donating anywhere in the thousands for the campaign. I wish that there were certain rules that you can only spend so much per senate seat running for, so much for your Treasurer ticket and so much for the President/VP. Make them work on a budget and solicit goods, items and/or discounts. That money donated should be going towards charities, not a leadership position and line on resume. Does anyone know the stipend Joe gets paid in his position? I am wondering who will break even if they win.

In other news, but still related, the SG budget seemed to be flawed in a way. I do hope that students recognize this is not entirely due to Ryan Mosely but a mistake in the SG Finance Office, Senate, the committee, etc. Come to think of it, those duties in the SG Office fell under Susan while she was working there.

Speaking of Susan, her website is the best of all parties. Gatorman already sad this earlier but I am just repeating it. She is the source I used earlier in my post about campaign contributions. The financial statements, which are public record, being on her site prove how she is the best candidate for the position. Yes that is right, I will endorse Susan for Student Body Treasurer. As for the President/VP I am still out on that one.

One last comment is about Unite and their Vice Presidential candidate of Brandon Siler. There is no way that Siler will be able to handle Football, School and SG. Notice how I ranked them because that is how it will fall. Siler is a student-athlete but I am sure his practices come before studying, but I am sure he has his schedule planned out. Jared though played his cards nice. Since President/VP are elected together there will be students who vote for Unite because of Siler. Siler will then resign and the backup will be appointed. However if Unite does win I hope that Siler as well as the rest of Unite will prove me wrong. When that happens I will write a formal apology, as long as someone asks as that will be almost a year from now.

Enjoy walking through Turlington.

If you build it, they will come

Seems as the Alligator yielded my advice from a few weeks ago regarding Facebook and Judicial Action. Link A few things about the story. When did IHRA become slave labor? The article is referenceing the student organization as if it is a paid posisition off of housing. If it is I know what organization I need to be in, not these ones that are volunteer only. (Aside, I know IHRA is not paid, just clearing that up.) Does it seem like Logan Smith may have sent up a red flag? After he was told about officials checking the facebook he removed 60 pictures, 5 quotes and 5 groups? Glad he cleaned up his facebook page, but as a student leader should he have admitted he had inappropiate things on his page? I also feel the article also doesn't cover the entire story. The way it is written seems as though it is directed towards Student Organizations or leadership positions but it is not. I know for a fact, which spun my other warning/investigative work, that a friend of a friend was cited for a judicial due to their facebook page and they are not in any organizations. Now if only they would check and take the same actions on SG.

Edit:I did find out later that the friend was in a very small organization and that the adviser decided to check their facebook profile. I do not have any confirmed "regular" students who have been brought in for a judicial from facebook.

Facebook and Judicial Action

So I am on a role tonight, why I don't know. This is going back to my initial post which cause many to get upset with me. Word on the street is look out for your facebook pictures. DSO has hired staff to surf the facebook. The UF network on facebook has to be huge no doubt, but a simple search of some of our current senators and I find pictures of underage drinking. This is not just noticing them out at a bar on the weekend with some friends or at a private party, but a picture of a senator with a beer bottle in hand looking like they have had more then one. Now in order to not have my head ripped off again I will not name any names, but I can say this is a repeat offender. If DSO is going to bring in students for judicial action based on pictures from the facebook then they should start with the student government officials. Also I think the Alligator should possibly do a story on DSO and the Judicial action that can result from the facebook.

The Wall

Since Monday we have had two letters printed about the Wall that was up last week. I saw the wall, I read the wall and I even attended the tearing down of it as well as smashing or at least attempting to smash a brick, but I just have to say I don't get it. I understand the concept but I don't think it is working. Also what is the cost of that wall? Couldn't that money be spent in other ways to help benefit the students more? Maybe I am naive, it was fun to read and it probably does spark conversation, but is that conversation making a change?

Jared endorses Team: MVP

Ok I admit the headline is misleading. While waiting for the updated Alligator online I went through my good old Friend Facebook. Jared is part of the group Ryan Sherry: The Social Butterfly. Sorry nothing scandalous there, just entertaining.

Also searching through groups I have found the "unoffical" Team: MVP Facebook group. I am wondering if this will turn into the first of possible many violations for Team: MVP as Sherry is a member of the group and it currently does not have the paid political advertisement or a statement saying it is the unofficial group.

Also last thing while surfing facebook I noticed Sherry graduated in 2005 and has his status as Alumni. Is he doing graduate work now?

What, no Birthday Party?

John Boyles came out Friday and announced his candidacy and his party name of SWAMP. I am sure that this name was very thought out and I wonder if Carmody knew of this coming. John and Carmody do have some likenesses and it would not surprise me if Carmody may be giving John some pointers however who knows how well that will help him out. Also Swamp even though having an "independent" candidate will be the Greek Party. Sorry John I do love you, but that is how I see it going down. I also predict Ryan Nelson playing some key of the SWAMP campaign.

Next we have Unite with Jared Hernandez as the front runner. As many have said Unite seem to be Impact. Adam Roberts has joined the Unite team. I really do not have any other predictions or comments on Unite as of now.

In our surprising twist we have MVP joining this year. I hope that those athletes slating are completely serious and if so good for them. If this is a joke though then I hope they withdraw in the next few weeks. Keg Party even though thought to be a joke or funny actually had some seriousness in their campaign. I hope the members of MVP are not just using their name to get into Senate, but using it to make a difference for the common student. MVP may just force a run off though, not many votes are needed to do that (example Keg with just over 1,000)

Of course we can not forget Susan. I have commented on her situation before in earlier posts. I think it is great she has that drive and ambition but I don't think she will stand a chance, especially if the other three run Treasurers.

So now we have three parties and one independent candidate. I can not tell you who I predict to win or who I will endorse yet. I need to see the other candidates in the party, especially the Vice Presidents and of course the platforms. If I had to vote on looks alone I think we all know who I would choose.

Since I did bring up the issue of platforms can someone tell me when it became popular to not have a list of possible issues for your platform before slating? This to me just further proves that it is more about the party then the issues.

Election Season

So from the Alligator the other day we have learned Susan is running independently for SB Treasurer. While I do like her drive I am not sure how much of a chance she stands. Clearly last election she was the most qualified, but the dominant party won. We will have to see who her competition is.

Speaking of which rumor has it that tomorrow, Friday afternoon, we will be getting an announcement from one of the SB President hopefuls. I have no other details then that so I don't know what time this will be announced, what the party name is, if and who running mates will be, etc. but at least we will have some official candidates announced. It won't be a surprise of who it is but if we had to votes on looks alone he would win in my book. Ahhh my heart is a fluttering... Anyone know where that party will be that night? I would love to try and become the first lady ;)

Another rumor has it that next week "Pumba" will be making an announcement. I can not comment on the validity of this rumor because this is one of those I heard so and so say that so and so said that the campaign manager of "Pumba" said that he would announce next week.

Now so far at least none of the parties chose to do it during Gator Nights which I think is stupid and tacky in its own ways, however there is the trend of going on a Friday. I guess it is so you can go out that night and party it up with your supporters. Hey JB if you read this which I know you check it out, especially when you are mentioned, why not send an invite my way, I would love to party with you.

Then of course from previous news we have the whole Cosimi shindigs that happened and I have decided I will keep my comments to myself on that on.

See you all Friday hopefully as long as I get that invite.

Alligator and Other Updates

First welcome to those who have been visiting since Monday. The story has given me hope to maybe collect a new audience.

Well, as I said Lyndsey has covered the story of SG blogs on Monday. Link. Not a bad story, still though seems like Alligator is digging for stories, this year just seems so slow in the dirt/gossip. Sorry Gatorman that you seem upset for not being included, I should of checked to see you got the e-mail a week ago as I am sure you would of contributed greatly to the article.

Speaking of Lyndsey, Lindsay Cosimi has surprised many and submitted her resignation. Link. We do hope everything is ok with Cosimi and her family and understand that sometimes things happen. Next week she is expected to address the Senate and explain why. I would encourage everyone, Greek or not, Gator Party or Not, Pro-Cosimi or Anti to check this meeting out. Yes, the Alligator will cover it, but I am sure they will not have the full speech word for word, only the Amazing Glenda will have that in the minutes from that meeting.

With that a vacant position is open for a few months. It may not seem like a big deal as spring elections are around the corner, but it is. Student Organization budget hearings are coming up. The student body treasurer is an ex-officio member of this committee. As Dennis said in the article this time last year he was meeting with the organizations to help them out. Now some of the organizations (JSU, ASU, BSU, etc.) should be fine, they have done this many times, but the smaller organizations may need help. Also the SB Treasurer plays an active roll in how SG funded organizations spend A&S Fees. They see EVERY request that is put into the Finance Office. Right now Joe will be approving these request, but he will not be doing as thorough of a job as Cosimi due to that he will also still be serving as SB President. The pig roast got through under a watchful eye last semester, now is the time for possibly more to slip through.

As far as replacement goes I can only see two people who could handle this position. These two however I know will not be on the list for recommendation. Fellow blogger Gatorman and Susan Henriques. It shall be interesting to see what names do come up and how Senate reacts. Again next week is the time to go to Senate, for once more then hey lets go to the swamp, or I want to have blue has my color for the senate basketball game will be discussed.

It is good to be back. Yes, I know I haven't posted in months, but nothing major SG related (besides now) has happened in months. I am just waiting for elections.

Yeah I am still here

So I know I haven't posted for awhile, but sadly Joe's reign as president has actually been fairly calm, at least calmer then I have expected. The real reason for this post is that many of your SG bloggers received an e-mail this morning from an Alligator reporter. She is working on a story on the SG blogs, so open up the Alligator on your way to class and check it out.

Also let me tell you how excited I am to be coming back. Maybe Joe has been good this year but SG elections are coming up very soon and we all know what that means. Mudslinging, trash talking, the rumors being put to rest and several election infractions. What more could this little girl dream for?

I must now go get ready for work, this lady has to be occupied in some way, so why not make some cash over the break? Again Monday's Alligator, pick it up, you know you missed it over the break, I sure did.

Are you achin', for some bacon?

So yes the Alligator did cover this in today's edition. Senate Pres hopeful Jared Hernandez hosted a party for his organizaion and used A&S Fees for the pig. All money has been paid back for the illegal use of money, but what was he thinking? I admit like Boyles I enjoyed the festivities and didn't know it was A&S Fees as well. Hernandez though should know better. Maybe his idea is bad publicity is good publicity, because it is, look how much bad press the Gator party had and won with. The Alligator did cross the line on saying how Hernandez failed to comment on if ID was checked for the keg. Hernandez did respond with the correct answer though regardless of if he did check IDs or not. Kids, remember that, if asked an incriminating question just say no comment, even if you did the right thing. If Hernadez did say yes he checked IDs and he really did, but then some underage kiddie got a hold of a beer then even more bad press (which include rumors) would come out saying that he is a boldfaced liar. Anyway I am somewhat looking for the public's reaction on this news. Do you think Hernandez made an honest mistake and should be forgiven or have you lost confidence in him possibly being the next Student Body President?

UF Lambda Chi makes National News

UF's chapter of Lambda Chi makes national news, well sort of...

It seems as though CollegeHumor.com has linked to the Alligator story regarding the SAE member who killed Lambda's rooster and injured a hen. My question is why do celebrities get so much? The Independent Florida Alligator reported that Kayne will receive $115,000 dollars for this performance (which does include the price of his special guest) as well as receiving a crap load of alcohol and the kicker four large white boxers. The O'Dome is paying for this man's underwear. Some things in the riders are understandable, not necessarily a requirement for them to do a show, but understandable. I like to use the analogy of having a party. West is the O'Dome's guest, you would like to provide them with some refreshments, snacks and entertainment, but I do not normally buy my party attendees underwear. I do hope that O'Connell Center Director Lionel Dubay negotiated from 10 pairs to 4. I mean come on, get a grip Kayne, buy your own underwear, not like you can't afford it.

Alligator Polls

Speaking of The Alligator in my last comment to my last post I thought of something. Why does the Alligator waste its time with the polls? Great questions are brought up, but when you have the response rate of maybe one hundred do the polls provide anything useful? At least free polling software is used but maybe a weekly discussion on the forum might prove to be a better turnout. Have Andy draw more heated editorials and have the discussed on the forum.

Mobile Campus

On an unrelated note of SG I thought I would discuss mobile campus. Mobile campus is about to complete its first month on campus and I have to say it has been a bust. I signed up on the first day just because 1) I have the unlimited text msging plan (best way to communicate in class with friends to make plans for the weekend) and 2) I wanted to have a chance to get the free giveaways. So upon signing up I saw very little groups to join, but with the upcoming elections I joined all the SG related groups which include SG Senate and Supervisor of Elections. I was hopping to get a text msg on the 27th or so reminding me to vote or telling me where to vote, etc. Short rant today and I understand this is a new service, but if all I am getting is a few ads every day it is not worth it to the students to join or the advertisers to market at. UF and MobileCampus need to get on the same page here and start using the service for what is meant for rather then every few days getting an occasional ad.

SG Elections

What type of SG blogger would I be if I did not cover the SG elections? So here we go, our live from Turlington coverage of the SG elections.

First thing first it seems as though the blue shirts easily outweigh the red. This can mean only one of two things, the Gator party cares more about SG then their own personal health or even their own future as many are probably skipping class as I speak (well, type) or it could mean that Gator party just has a crapload more supporters (they do have about 7,000 greek members to pool from). Speaking of supporters I just heard one Gator Party supporter say, "You know why we have so much support? 2/3rds of those slated with the Gator Party have been involved in senate or..." and at that point I could not longer here her as she walked away with the two gentleman she was talking to. 2/3rds does not surprise me at all, SG is greek controlled, Gator is greek controlled. End of story. (Please do not think I am anti greek, I am not, I am anti one small percentage of student population controlling SG).

Second thing. Absentee ballots. I would like to thank Paul for his help in this issue. He e-mailed me as well as many other fellow bloggers about his petition and absentee ballot movement. When I contacted him back I learned he was going to vote in the upcoming SG elections by absentee. I asked him to e-mail me the process so I could analyze it.

714.0 of Student body statues states
The Supervisor of Elections shall be responsible for the preparation of the ballot and for the preparation of the application form for the absentee ballot. The ballot shall contain names of all candidates to appear on the ballots, and shall contain adequate provision for writing in the names of candidates not appearing thereon.

On the absentee ballot no provision was made for write in. The application process for an absentee ballot was to e-mail Sandy Vernon of the SG office name, UF ID# and address.

Section 775.0 of the Statues states:
Every absent elector that requests an absentee ballot from the Supervisor of Elections no later than 7 school days before the beginning of the election may cast an absentee ballot in lieu of an election ballot. The Supervisor of Elections shall deliver an absentee ballot to an absent elector making a timely request for an absentee ballot no later that 5 days before the election. The Supervisor of Elections shall ensure that a stamped, self-addressed envelope and instructions on the use of an absentee ballot accompanies each absentee ballot.

In this cause our absent elector had to pick up the Ballot from the SG office. He was contacted by Sandy 5 days prior to the elections starting. Upon picking up the absentee ballot no verification of identification occurred. The ballot itself did have a return envelope, but it was not self addressed or stamped. Instructions were given to our absent elector of how to properly return the ballot, of which only stated the ballot had to be dropped off at the supreme court office. For reference the supreme court office is down the hall from the computer lab on the 3rd floor of the Reitz. Our absent elector had to travel further and be even more inconvenienced to cast a vote.

Third. Congrats to those IRHA kids for standing up in front of senate. Word of wisdom for President Walicki, choose a hair color and stick with it. Not sure how I like the hair right now. Alligator story

Fourth. Technical difficulties. Alligator has covered a good portion in today's edition. In no way could a change like this be completed without some technical difficulties. Many of the problems would not exist if online voting was "unsecured site". A few questions in my mind is why did SW Rec not have voting for the first four hours? Why did Library east have no "guy from elections" come by? Congrats to the Alligator Editorial Board for so many well deserved darts. Source. Do these technical difficulties merit going back to paper ballots? No!

Lastly predictions. Tonight after midnight (which would technically be tomorrow) election results will be announced at the Orange and Brew, why not the Swamp I ask, but I guess it is because Orange and Brew serves alcohol and it is on campus, anyway on with my predictions:

Broward and Rawlings/Yulee seat will be thrown out and have another election.
All district seats will be taken by Gator. Many on-campus dorm seats will be Gator with a few going to Impact. At the end of the night we will have a few happy Impact senators but Gator will take the overall win.

Isn't it Ironic?

The other day while visiting the SG offices to say hi to my love John Boyles I noticed somthing somewhat ironic. You may ask why again, so I will show you a cartoon from a few years ago:

And then the response cartoon in the Monday newspaper after JSU protested:

What is the role of an editorial cartoonist? After some research I found:

Editorial Cartooning: Unlike the comics on the "funny pages," political or editorial cartoons have, for well over a century, been a respected means for expressing opinions on events, personalities, and issues in the public debate. Today a Pulitzer Prize is awarded annually for Editorial Cartooning. Such cartoons are not meant primarily to entertain or to generate humor. Rather, their purpose is to make pointed commentaries on subjects of public interest in an interesting and arresting manner. Thus, they appear on the editorial pages of newspapers, magazines, and other publications rather than in pages devoted to entertainment.

Generally we think of editorials as being text, but the political cartoon makes its editorial comment with a graphical display, primarily with pictures, usually including some text either as a caption or as dialogue. The effective cartoonist provides enough information in the cartoon to give the viewer a clear idea of the subject or issue and what the view on that subject the cartoonist has. The cartoonist has a topic and a thesis. In other words, the cartoon provides the answers to the questions, "What'’s the topic?" and "What'’s the point?"

Source: http://www.homepages.dsu.edu/nelsonj/webcomp/editorial_cartoon--full.htm

Andy's opinion from the cartoon: Bush does not hate blacks. Could that same message be said with Rice saying "Oh, please!"? Yes, but because the "n"-word was used the University got something so much better from Andy. UF had inspiration to discuss an issue that is unrelated to Bush hating blacks, UF students, professors, faculty and staff are now discussing and debating the use of the "n"-word. Thank you Andy.

Now to switch gears a little. Joe exploited this oppertunity to get what he has always wanted, SG out of the Alligator. It is no secret that Joe and other members of student government are anti-alligator. Joe has manipulated the situation and used it to provide a valid reason to withdraw all SG (however not SG funded organization) advertising from the Alligator. Question to the readers, is the Wednesday update considered a "campus-wide newspaper"?

Free Towels

So first I would like to say that many of you may have thought I quit like many of the other blogs, but I have not quit, well at least not yet. Due to the hectic ness of rushing, classes starting up, etc. I have put blogging on the back burner. Plus I felt nothing of urgency needed to be reported, until now.

Last night the Towel Bill was presented to Senate and passed with very little opposition. 15,000 towels will be purchased at 1.06 each. The towels will be 12 x 16, white with the SG logo. Laundry service was calculated with a simple formula and will cost 25,608 for the year. This includes pick up and delivery 3 times a week, full wash and dry, folding, laundry bags and stands for receptacles. Total cost for the towels will be 49,608 coming from the already depleted reserves account. Where this is a great concept and this was a main issue on their platform there are some concerns I have about the money.

1) Life of towels. It is said that the towels should last 3 years. I would like to know if Joey and Co. contacted any gym of health club to find out how often towels are replaced due to theft, damage and overall cleanliness. Some towels will be stolen, accidentally and purposefully, that is inevitable. The towels being washed so much and then also just use will wear down; some may even get damaged while on the workout floor. White towels will also show the dirt, sweat, etc. I am also wondering how many times they will be washed with bleach, if any.

2) Reoccurring cost. Let’s say the towels do the last the expected three years. Every three years 24,000 is spent for new towels so that is 8,000 per year, not bad. The 25,608 cleaning cost though is not budgeted for next year, so again reserves will be used to continue the program. The cleaning cost is also an estimate, which I feel could be underestimated. I would rather overestimate the cost then under. Who doesn’t like sticking their hands into their jeans and finding $5?

3) Dependence. People will become dependent on these towels. I know usage numbers were researched and that is why pick up and delivery is 3 times a week and 15,000 were ordered but I am worried what will happen when some off chance there are no towels available and people are turned away from working out.

In no way am I saying this money should or should not be spent but I feel in order to comprehend the situation these concerns need to be addressed.

Check back soon for Election coverage and commentary.

Impact and Progress to Wed

The Progress and Impact parties will unite Friday, August 26, 2005 at 11:30 a.m. in Turlington Plaza in a mock wedding to celebrate the merging of these two Student Government parties that formed in the spring of 2005.

The Progress and Impact parties shared common values in the spring 2005 election, and in the upcoming fall 2005 election, they shall also share a name. They are making waves and jumping right in with the online voting issue despite coming in last in a 3 horse race (with a full exec ticket).

http://www.progressuf.com/action.php

Along the same page NAGAS the newest blogger on the block has gone buck and posted what would be a 15 page essay (jk) in regards to online voting.

Visitors to Senate tonight wear something comfortable because this will be a long debated night especially with Susan's amendment. The committee says Secure and a committee member comes out and wants unsecured. As Gareth Kerr stated

The Committee came to the unanimous conclusion that secure location was best method to recommend at this time. While some of us wanted to see a different outcome it became apparent that this is the best option for the time being.

Susan I would say is one who wants a different outcome and is taking it into her own hands.

My concern is why is no one all up on the wording of this bill? The bill does not guarantee online voting will be used, just that it would no longer be illegal inthe statues to use "secured" online voting. The supervisor of elections can and will be able to choose the method s/he wants. You want coercion? Oh man I can see it now. Alligator reports SoE driving around in a new car because paper ballots were used.

I will say though that regardless if the bill passes (with or without amendment) it is a step forward, maybe a very small one, but at least the possibility would exist for the true meaning of online voting.

SG: Revenge of the Greek

Heard a rumor today that there is going to be a mainstream Hollywood movie based on UF's own Student Government. After some research I was able to find out more about the film.

The director chosen is Tim Burton. With this news of course we would expect to see Depp playing a role in the film however no official announcement has been made by Depp or Burton.

Matt Chamoff will be played by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Kevin Bacon will be played by no other then Kevin Bacon. This will be confusing to some. "You hear about Kevin Bacon's new movie?" "Yeah, he is playing Kevin Bacon" "He is playing himself, is it a biography?" "No he is playing the part of Kevin Bacon" "What?"

Kal Penn will be playing a small role as Sundeep Rawal. Originally Penn was unavailable due to the filming schedule of Superman Returns but Burton insisted on Penn playing Sundeep and offered an unknown amount of money to secure Penn.

Miss Madam Kassim will be played by Regina Hall.

The top three choices for John Boyles include Matthew McConaughey, Jude Law and Freddie Prince Jr (think blonde hair in Scooby Doo).

Glenda will be played by Sally Field.

Semmel will be played by Chris Evans who has stared in films such as Not Another Teen Movie, Cellular and Summer Hit Fantastic Four.

Of course the main character of "SG: Revenge of the Greek" is no other then Joe Goldberg. Originally Goldberg was to be played by Tom Cruise but Burton felt this was not a fair representation for Goldberg, so Verne Troyer has officially been named for the part.

Online Voting Makes Progress

The online voting committee has decided to take the option of secured voting as predicted by a number of individuals, not just myself. Also thanks to the Online voting committee for presenting a blog.

It seems there are four options available for voting. The current paper one, an electronic machine, secured online voting and unsecured online voting. The terms secure and unsecured mean the location and not the actual online part. Both online voting options have 128 bit encryption which has yet to be cracked.

Secured online voting would mean the typical same polling locations would be used, poll workers would be present actually verifying identities however instead of having certain locations you can only go to you would be allowed to go to any location. Also with this option you would cut the cost of printing ballots.

Unsecured is being able to vote from practically anywhere that has a computer. Restrictions of course could be made so lets say the wireless internet can't be used to vote so parties can not just have laptops in turlington getting people to vote. As you can see the term unsecured comes from the act that it is not 100% sure the person voting is who they say they are (giving away gatorlink ID and password) or no one is watching over them as they vote.

The electronic machines are just too much initial cost in my opinion so I don't think that scenario should be discussed.

--Editors note: All the below is not my personal opinion, but concerns of all that were voiced--
From the open forum from what I could gather, compile, etc. There was the debate mostly between secure and unsecured. Which way people feel most for is hard to tell. Secure is not as high turn out as unsecured could provide. Unsecured has the possibility of people forcing others to vote or people voting for others. Secure you have computer labs and banks of computers reserved for voting purposes only, that will make some upset.

It was questioned though if trust should be put in place of the students. Should the students be allowed to be trusted that they will value their vote and not give away their gatorlink username and password to others or be swayed to vote a certain way?

At the end of the forum guests were invited to vote and comment on the issue, Senators were excluded in this voting. Online Voting Committee will look into these votes and comments and present a recommendation for Senate on Tuesday.

Dirt's Prediction: Secured Online Voting
Results: Pass senate but still low voter turn out, maybe a few thousand more if lucky.

For reference Andrew Hoffman's committee findings are still online

Where's Waldo?

Does anyone know where Joe, Joyce and Lindsay are at? His absence for visiting Israel was not expunged. He was able to go through Hillel and birth right and almost lost his seat because of his religion. Wouldn't that fall under the anti-discriminate acts? I am glad Senate did act in the proper manner regarding this. Rules and Ethics also did the appropriate thing by the statutes, but come on, give the Jewish boy a break.

Congrats Senator Stone for being elected to the MAL Replacement and Agenda seat. Easy to beat out no one, sure did make the meeting get over quicker. I am glad that 7 senators make up all the committees, good diverse ideas. The senate basketball game should just be exec vs. committees cause clearly not enough senators are in committees to have a large tournament.

Props to Belle for trying to make the statues better, but that wording for the "“most read"” was awful. I understand the reasoning to put the power back into our hands rather then a third party paper but that wording is just to ambiguous.

Shout out to the Reitz Rambler for providing as of now the best senate entertainment. A little too easy, but still very entertaining. I especially love 19 across.

Mad props to Joe, Joyce and Lindsay for being out of town at a conference. Because of that the meeting was only two and a half hours long rather then three.

Word to the back corner of Patrone, Stone, Chamoff, Semmel, Mosely and crew for tag teaming it up to "move the previous question" and seconding it. I do have to say I had a fun time in Orlando and I was glad to get away from it all.

It is said things are just to get hotter. Meteorologists predict that August will be the hottest ever. Aren’t we glad we live in Florida? (I will look for the link of the news)

UF Admin is raping us again. Congrats to the Reitz Rambler for sending out a plea to SG (http://reitzrambler.blogspot.com/2005/07/student-government-act-now.html) and congrats for baiting in a Senator. In the resolution I request to ask the administration to at least use a condom.

As SP commented, I do agree it was a lame joke about Growl, however I felt it was only fair to let Growl announce talent rather then leaking it. Now that it is officially out there I have to say Rob did a good job. Rob you are moving to fast for me though, I think we need to end it.

Growl tickets are on sale three months before the event, which is fine, but you have to pick up your ticket now, which is a disadvantage for the students not here in the summer. Whereas 15,000 tickets will not be sold over the summer they have a less chance of obtain tickets upon returning.

The talent was announced too early. Announcing the talent will drive up ticket sales again causing a disadvantage to those not here until the fall.

I think tickets should be sold like football tickets. Pay now, pick up later. Oh and one odd thing is for each student you can bring 10 IDs with you. How the hell did they come up with that number? At least each ID is reference to the tickets not just shown for the tickets, at least that is what I am led to believe.

Growl Act Secured

Rumor has it that Growl has secured an act. Chamoff claims quorum is not defined anywhere in the governing documents of Student Government. While this is true this logic is flawed in two ways.

First, if the quorum is not defined then why do all Senate meetings start with quorum being established? Is Senate establishing nothing? (no pun intended)

Second, with further review Robert's Rules of Order states quorum and therefore there is no need for the worry:

A Quorum of an assembly is such a number as must be present in order that business can be legally transacted. The quorum refers to the number present, not to the number voting. The quorum of a mass meeting is the number present at the time, as they constitute the membership at that time. The quorum of a body of delegates, unless the bylaws provide for a smaller quorum, is a majority of the number enrolled as attending the convention, not those appointed. The quorum of any other deliberative assembly with an enrolled membership (unless the by-laws provide for a smaller quorum) is a majority of all the members.

Scary thing is Chamoff is the Judiciary Chair, however, doesn't seem to know his procedures too well.

Welcome Newest Blogger

Welcome to Greek on a Leash the newest SG Blogger on the block. With all the Summer Replacements is this good or bad?

Pros: More people get involved, new ideas are driven in, different perspectives, less party alliance and more independence

Cons: Some are not familiar with SG (especially the Freshmen), 6 weeks is a short time (For Summer A or B replacements) with 12 a bit longer but not the full year experience, major planning happens over the summer

Busting with updates

Well in my updating I forgot to include some information. I have not seen or heard anything come in frotn of Senate regarding the funding of the trip, but it does take weeks prior to get authorization or funding so it could of passed months ago but I am sure the Alligator would of heard of it as well.

The joys of Tuesday Night

Ah yes the joys of Tuesday night and Senate.

Senate tonight was eventful, so much that it took 3 hours to complete. Sad thing is 2 1/2 hours was spent on reports, passing two bills (both resolutions) and electing a new Replacement and Agenda Member at Large. The last thirty minutes was spent on the other four bills (Gville Sun Readership Program, Amendment to SB Statute 322.2, A&S Fee Budget Revision (no new numbers, just updating the categories), and the Authorization for the $140,000 for Growl Tickets.

Let's talk about Growl to begin with as plans have changed from last reported. The authorization was only for the $140,000 PTI allowed to pass. The idea right now is to provide tickets at a subsidized cost to students. Students will pay $5 for a ticket which is a $13 discount for the normal price. With $140,000 allocated that means 10,769 student tickets can be picked up without going over that amount. If more tickets are picked up SGP will cover the subsidy cost. Senate and SGP will then look to see how many extra tickets were picked up (if any) and then place another bill in front of Senate to transfer that money from reserves to cover those costs. The idea behind that is so SGP will still have the 400,000 in program allotted to them during the budget creation cycle and if fewer tickets are picked up then there is no extra work needed to be done to pass the extra $55,000 to cover the possibility of 15,000 student tickets being sold.

Now to the R&A member at large seat. Senator Belle and Senator Moseley both ran for the seat. It was a very close vote with Senator Moseley winning by one vote with the final count 32-31. The senate chambers became very chaotic during this entire procedure. The main reason for the chaos is because the election procedure was not known. This was somewhat a surprise as Parliamentarian Sharpless started to flip through his binder to look it up. Senate President Kassim and Pro Temp Boyles both knew of this upcoming election, why was procedure not reviewed prior to the meeting? Also after the vote was counted up a few Senators felt that the vote was not tallied correctly and were figuring out the proper motions and procedure in order to have a revote to verify the results. After all was said and done, Moseley walked away with the seat.

Speaking of Belle any updates on the documentary on him?

At the end of the meeting a newly appointed graduated Senator did point out the irony in SG of how there was the Resolution for Alcohol and the Task forces on Alcohol SG has with the "“socializing" at the Swamp by the Senators (of which I will not comment on all the "“socializing" that may or may have not occurred tonight). Her comment seemed to go back to one of my first few posts and I think she is on the same page as me. For those of you playing at home that is page 342.

Visitors

Seems like we have some interesting visitors. I have included comments on the three major parties and maybe will discuss the other few (Voice and Iron Fist) later if things are going a bit slow.

Impact - First did anyone think that the Impact colors were very close to Ignite? Strike One. Then you have the treasurer candidate issue. Strike Two. Dennis chose a very weak running mate in my opinion, Strike Three. Overall though, Impact was a very strong contender for Gator to compete with. Even with low turnout for the election they came very close to getting near half the votes. I was slightly surprised as I felt most of the students would of felt like Dennis as a part of Access joined when Access sold out. Despite all the issues Impact faced they had a good run.

Gator – What can I say? They won. Gator had the hardest campaign of the three major parties, but still pulled it out, all because the numbers showed up. Despite Joe’s short stature is he is the big man on campus this next year (sorry had to get that in somewhere). Joey G has not pulled any shenanigans yet unlike last summer, but he is again just finishing up his second month. Overall we are not doomed, but Gator was the last on my list of parties to win. I am upset by the use of the name Gator and the cheer “It’s great to be the Gator Party”. Congrats Joey G, Joyce and Lindsay I am excited to see what you do this year and how many of your platform issues you accomplish or at least attempt. One last thing that bugged me too was the freaking commercial. How much did you all pay for that anyway? I go home to get away from UF and there is it on my TV while watching MTV, ugh!

Progress - Face it guys, elections are all popularity contest not what you have to offer (ok so it may help some to have good ideas). Mackenzie and Adam were not well known by the student body. They got their RA friends to rally behind them but they need more. Progress did run the cleanest campaign and compared to the other two major parties they actually did everything right (turn in paperwork, etc.) which is odd as they were the new party without a lot of SG election experience. I hope to see some of them back; Mackenzie and Susan have been involved, wonder where Adam will fall. Susan was also the best candidate for SB Treasurer with all her previous experience I was expecting a split executive ticket, but clearly I was wrong on that.

Gator Growl Bill Round 2

So I have noticed I forgot to post the update on what happened with the Growl Bill and Forum. Must of been the excitement of the summer break.

June 28th, the first meeting of Summer B, a bill will go before the Senate that will give a $13 subsidy for 15,000 student tickets. That means tickets will only be $5 if the bill passes and $195,000 will be spent. There is no word on if PTI will like the new revised bill, especially with more money ($55,000) from reserves being shelled out. I feel though she will see this as a positive use of student funds. My guess is she had the problem with the free rider and the cost to provide free tickets.

Sadly this week is slow, but freshmeat do come in soon. Maybe some commentary if I see them out and about during the break.

The movers and shakers of SG

Just a fun little analysis of some of those in SG:

John Boyles - John is one of the only few people who keep his opinion to himself. He does not use nor wants to use his position to sway votes or back certain bills. There have been a few bills in which John has authored and sponsored however if he is not involved (like Gator Growl bill) he does not publicly say in his report his opinion unlike Joey G, Joyce, Lindsay and even madam President Kassim. This guy is on the move, I expect to see him as Senate President next semester and running for Student Body President in the Spring.

Kevin Bacon - 6 Degrees of Kevin Bacon don't apply to Senate. It is more like 2 Degrees because this kid is everywhere. He is commonly presenting bills and/or amending them. This kids is getting his name out there and I am not sure of his deeper motives, maybe he just does care so much. Senator Bacon also does not mind making waves such as challenging Joey and Joyce with their expansion on cabinet positions. He says it is ok to expand however you must get rid of those which are useless.

Diana Kassim - Madam President Kassim does a fantastic job at running the meetings. Many times I have noticed her correctly following rules and procedures. Running meetings is not the simplest of task and she has done a fantastic job to keep them efficient. I have yet to see her pull a "Goldberg" and I highly doubt she will. I would love to see her run for office and maybe love anymore to see her in office. I think it is more of the female minority then the what-she-can-bring-to-the-table that interest me.

Jared Hernandez - Famous for his Chomp the Vote TV commercials. I have to commend him for taking up such a large project. The limos may have been a little over the top, but still a fun idea. Now he has taken up being co-chair of the online voting committee a non-partisan committee. Jared is setting up to make some political move possibly, just watch him.

Glenda - Yes I know she has a paid position and it is her job, but she is a key of SG. Glenda is the "mother" of all the Senators, very nice, knows what is going on etc. Due to her kind personality I am sure she knows a lot more about SG then she may want to know. When she retires I can see her publishing a book of deep down dirt of UF SG. My tip to Glenda is to start writing down notes or even the book. I know for sure I would love to read all about what she knows as would many other people.

Rob and Chris Carmody - Even though not in SG (Chris was, but is no longer) both guys are still very closely tied to SG. Chris did an amazing job at putting together a bill to save a failing program. Chris knows how to play in the SG sandbox, he also knows the loop holes and how to get around things (ie. pass the bill in the summer, Growl is failing so guarantee ticket sales and give back to the students all at once). Rob on the other hand does not know how to play in the SG sandbox as he seems intimidated, however he will be a better director then in past years. He has better money sense then his predecessor (90,000 for Engval and 45,000 for Cook was way too much to spend, but I do admit overall the past year was a great Gator Growl). Poor Rob getting the shaft with the line item veto, however 80,000 was just "found" so he is not hurting as much as he could be.

Wyatt Sexton Police Report

I know this is not SG news, but still relevant to UF students and a fun read: Wyatt Sexton Police Report

Goodbye Rachel Conners?

Was all that time needed to be spent of each person saying goodbye to Chairwoman Rachel Conners on Tuesday? In essence the screaming just waste even more time as procedures for division then ensue.

I have to agree whole heartedly with him. AS has been practices, all expenditures from this account continue approval and oversight from the University of Florida.

Section I amending the 2005-2006 A&S Fee Budget is hereby vetoed.

Although the approved portions of Student Body Laws 2005-124 don't require it, I would encourage Student Government and Homecoming/Gator Growl to arrange a ticket subsidy agreement with this allocation of $140,000.

Furthermore, Student Government should be listed as a co-sponsor for Gator Growl and all Homecoming celebrations. The rider regarding SG's bulk purchase of tickets is null, the second rider regarding SG commercial space during Growl is valid, and the third rider regarding SGP is null.

Upon further review of the circumstances surrounding the passing of this bill, I have determined that this course of action meets all legal requirements and is in the best interest of the student body. The financial position of Gator Growl and Homecoming has been determined to be on surer footing than previously thought. Where it was believed that about $25,000 was in the account from last year, due to PeopleSoft accounting difficulties, we have determined that there is $103,000 in the account. The transfer of university funds to the University Established Account for the Benefit of Homecoming and Gator Growl is legal, and the university retains approval and oversight of all expenditures from that account, as has been the practice.

Soak it up Bernie

And one wonders why Bernie would want a dry campus?
